It is estimated that there are over 50, 000 people living with HIV in Sierra Leone, yet Sierra Leone continues to have high levels of HIV and AIDS-associated stigmatization, discrimination and denial. Many people living with HIV in Sierra Leone have suffered from stigma and discrimination and feel powerless to act without the support of a larger body of people living with HIV to offer a united voice against acts of discrimination.
NETHIPS, a legally registered umbrella, represents over 33 organisations, with regional offices in Bo, Kenema and Makeni. It has given a human face to the epidemic and plays a significant role in all sectors of the HIV and AIDS response, including awareness-raising, voluntary counseling and testing, treatment, care and support services. By holding the governments’ response to HIV and HIV-related stigma accountable NETHIPS is working towards a Sierra Leone in which all people living with HIV and orphans and vulnerable children shall enjoy equal rights and opportunities and live productive and meaningful lives.
In partnership with the National AIDS Secretariat, UNAIDS and Christian Aid and partners NETHIPS will host a Symposium on Thursday 28th August 2008 at 10:00am. The Symposium to be held at the ‘Atlantic Hall – National Stadium will address the issue of Overcoming HIV &AIDS related stigma and will be attended by a number of dignitaries and partners. In addition, NETHIPS would like to invite the general public to an Inter-faith service which will be held at CCSL hall on 3rd September 2008 at 10am. Everyone is welcome.
