In its bid to alleviate the perennial problem of housing faced by Sierra Leoneans over the decades, the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) through its national housing project aimed at finding permanent solution to accommodation constraints has completed the construction of beautiful and affordable houses in the four provincial headquarter cities, and Waterloo in the western rural district respectively.

At Waterloo where NASSIT acquired about a hundred and three (103) acres of land, the insurance trust has built ten houses and now ready for mortgage at affordable costs by the public.

In each of the three provincial cities, NASSIT has completed in record time six furnished dwelling apartments all ready for mortgage to interested Sierra Leoneans at reasonable costs.  All the structures built by NASSIT in the various mentioned regions are of three and two bed room self contained suites respectively with functional electrification, water supply and storage outlets. The structures also have spacious car parks with magnificent views that serve as tourist attractions.

NASSIT’s housing project has undeniably become one of Sierra Leone’s success stories in the area of affordable accommodation for low income earners.  According to the Project Manager Mr. Cyril Timbo who spoke to this medium on such laudable achievement by his institution, all the acquired lands were given to NASSIT by the Government of Sierra Leone, and that the project is in its pilot phase.  The essence of the project he iterated is geared towards triggering investment for other entities that may wish to engage in housing business.  He informed that upon the successful mortgage of the completed immeubles, they will immediately embark on the second phase of construction. He also informed that at present NASSIT is engaged in designing a master plan that will be used by other interested entities to develop the rest of the land in the foreseeable future.

Mr. Cyril Timbo disclosed that Home Finance Mortgage Company (HFC) is charged with the responsibility to undertake the mortgage process and will accordingly determine the cost of each of the structures.

Also to dilate on the success of the project was the Deputy Director General (DDG) of NASSIT in-charge of Administration, Mr. Joseph S. Mans (Jr) who proffered that it was but rare in the history of this country to see projects successfully implemented in record time. He paid special tributes to the Project Manager, the Architects and contractors, including the entire management of NASSIT for their concerted efforts to make their dream a reality.  He underscored the statutory mandate of the institution in the engagement of socially targeted investments in line with government’s poise to see low income earning Sierra Leoneans own their own houses.  “In line with President’s Agenda for Change, we strive to develop this country through infrastructure,” he noted, adding that the more the demand for the structures in the first pilot phase, the more inspiration they will get to construct more in the near future.  He disclosed that interested persons may apply for a unit or more through their agent, Home Finance Mortgage Company.

The DDG expressed that in spite of the many criticisms from the public against some of their activities citing the malfunctioned ferry saga as an example, NASSIT can also proudly boast of other developmental achievements such as the recent adjustment in pensions payment from 20% to 30% and the successful housing project among others.

“Also as party of our desire to give Sierra Leone a face lift, NASSIT is in advanced stage of constructing ultra modern shopping malls and transport terminals with recreational facilities in the three provincial cities of Bo, Kenema and Makeni,” he proudly concluded, while calling on Sierra Leoneans to continue putting their trust in the scheme for an enhanced future.
