Sierra Leone gets woman as Deputy Mayor of its Capital, Freetown

In fulfillment of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma’s promises to the women of Sierra Leone for a "30% Quota" and increase in women involvement in politics and positions of trust, the Freetown City Council (FCC) which is 100% dominated by Koroma's All Peoples Congress (APC) party members, has on Friday 28th December 2012 unanimously voted Councilor (Mrs.) Hannah Mary Jaiah of Ward 360, Constituency 101 as Deputy Mayor of Freetown. This laudable development came shortly after another woman of substance, Madam Sunkari Kabba-Kamara was overwhelmingly voted in as Mayor of the similarly 100% APC-dominated Makeni City Council.

Deputy Freetown Mayor, Mrs. Hannah Mary Jaiah in an exclusive interview with Awareness Times on Saturday 29th December 2012 at her office in Freetown said her victory is a clear manifestation that the days when women were asked to stay at home and watch over the children whilst the men go for positions of trust and decision making are fast gone. She used the forum to call on the women of Sierra Leone to come together and work towards the developing and progress of Sierra Leone.

Mrs. Jaiah said as Deputy Mayor, she will ensure a collaborative effort with the Mayor and all other Councilors to clean Freetown off street trading, filth and other vices.

She thanked and lauded the past Mayor and Councillors of the last City Council of years 2004 to 2008 and years 2008 to 2012 but speedily accepted that there were a lot of lapses during those councils which she promised that the new team will work assiduously to settle.

"We will clean any stains, shameful and disgraceful marks that the past Councils might have left behind," she said.

The newly elected Deputy Mayor further reminded the Councilors that they are representing the people who look at them with high expectations and as such they should do their best in the execution their duties. The Deputy Mayor also promised to work with all residents of Freetown devoid of their political affiliations, for the betterment of the Council and Sierra Leone as a whole.
