The Directorate of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the Office of the President is soon to be known as the Sierra Leone National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SLeNCSA). According to a press release issued on June 24 2010, the Directorate will become a full fledged Commission immediately President Koroma assents into law the recently enacted SLeNCSA Act of 2010. The Act was enacted by the Sierra Leone Parliament on Tuesday June 22, 2010. The Secretariat of the Commission would be housed on the ground floor of the old Ministry of Defence Building, State Avenue in Freetown.
"The Directorate takes this opportunity to extend its heartfelt gratitude to all its local and international partners particularly His Excellency the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, the House of Parliament, the security sector, civil society (especially the Sierra Leone Action Network on Small Arms – SLANSA) Law Officers Department, the UNDP, ECOWAS/ECOSAP respectively for their support in the realization of the Commission," the release states.
The Secretariat is however, "calling on all its local and international partners and Sierra Leoneans in general to cooperate with the Commission in the implementation of its primary mandate, which is the control of the manufacture, trade and use of small arms and light weapons and other related materials within the borders of Sierra Leone in line with government’s effort to achieve sustainable peace, progress and prosperity for our dear country".
