In Sierra Leone like in many other developing countries, an unknown number of women suffer from one of the most severe pregnancy related complications - known as Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) which is one of the worst morbidities that can ever occur to any woman on earth. In this vein, the Aberdeen Women Centre in Sierra Leone’s capital city which was established in 2005 by Mercy Ship has been making tremendous steps in treating, containing VVF in Sierra Leone.
In an exclusive chat this week, the Country Director Aberdeen Women Centre, Jude said they had handled some 2,000 individual cases since the inception of the Centre at the rate of at least Two Hundred and fifty (250) fistula patients yearly.
She praised the Mercy Ships, Global Foundation, UNAIDS, UNFPA and other smaller organizations for assisting with logistics and salaries. She informed that they work under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.
In conclusion, she called on all women faced with VVF to immediately call 555 from any Airtel line so that they will be promptly attended to. She said VVF is a condition that can easily ruin a woman’s dreams, transform the most beautiful and admirable woman into a walking septic tank which automatically reduces her into an outcast.
