Citation for James Blyden Jenkins-Johnston (GCOR)
In recognition of 38 years of Distinguished Public Service as a General Legal Practitioner, Human Rights Lawyer and Social Commentator.
He graduated Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English Language and Literature from Fourah Bay College (then University of Durham in 1969) and proceeded to the United Kingdom to study Law in 1970. He was called to the English Bar at the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, London in July 1974 after which he returned home and set up a general legal practice covering the whole of the country.
Throughout these past 38 years, he has served within and without the legal profession in several capacities.
He was City Solicitor (1983); Member of the Freetown City Council Committee of Management (1986/89); Elected President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association for 3 consecutive terms (1988/91); Chairman, Board of Governors, Murraydeen Preparatory School; Member of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission (1989-1999), Member of the Council of Legal Education (1989/92); Founding Tutor, Sierra Leone Law School (1990); founding Bencher Sierra Leone Law School (1990).
He was a member of the National Constitutional Review Commission appointed by the late President J.S. Momoh in 1990, which drew up the present National Constitution in 1991.
He was appointed NOTARY PUBLIC in 1992 and Chairman, Board of Directors Sierra Leone External Communications Co. Ltd (SLET) from 1992 to 1995.
He was chosen by his Colleagues as Interim Chairman of the Sierra Leone Bar Association between 1997/1998 during the interregnum, when most lawyers had left the Country.
He was appointed a Commissioner of the Law Reform Commission in 2003, and Chairman of the Teaching Service Trade Group Negotiating Council in 2003.
He has been a steadfast Champion of Workers’ rights, and has been Legal Adviser to the Sierra Leone Labour Congress for over 30 years.
He was appointed Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry to inquire into the disturbances at Koidu Holdings in Kono by President Koroma in January 2008 and produced a report in just 3 months in March 2008.
He is a member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, International Associate of the American Bar Association, Member of the International Bar Association to which he was elected as an Executive Member in 2000.
He is currently a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council. He is happily married with 5 children, two (2) of whom are also Lawyers.
