The Bonthe Municipal Council, Bonthe District is currently calling on Government to come to their aid with regards funding and implementing developmental projects in the island.
This call was made by the Chief Administrator (CA) of Bonthe Municipal Council, Mr. Morisson Farmer. Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday 23rd May 2012 in Bonthe, Mr. Farmer expressed dissatisfied at the slow pace at which projects were being supported and implemented in the island by the local government ministry.
According to him, funding from local government to the municipality island is a huge challenge for his administration, noting that since 2010 the municipal council has not received any local government grant.
He said they were supposed to use these grants to undertake development projects within the municipality.
One major challenge faced by the council according to Mr. Farmer, is mobility and accessibility to certain inland villages to carry out council’s work.
“I believe there is bias in the allocation of funding to councils nationwide,” said the CA, whilst urging government to review its support to Bonthe municipal council in view of the many chiefdoms and villages that comes to council for assistance for their respective localities, especially in the area of education, health, agriculture, among others.
However, Mr. Farmer used the forum to outline the construction of bridges, culverts and feeder roads as some of the council’s construction works that had been undertaken in the past years, whilst further calling on government to assist his council to archive its objectives.
