Tribalism & Marginalisation Spoilt My Father’s SLPP

Alhaji Usman Boie Kamara has used quotations from the Holy Koran and Holy Bible in his speech of declaration for the ruling APC last Saturday June 9th 2012 whilst denouncing the tribalism and marginalisation which he says made him leave his father’s party, the SLPP. Boie-Kamara thanked the executive and members of the APC for giving him and his team what he described as, a very warm welcome to their party. He further referred to the SLPP as a party full of hatred for progressive members, deep marginalization, gross disrespect, and shocking tribalism, among other things. He however said the APC, on the other hand was where people should gather for solace from bad weather conditions.

“You all remember the scripture in the Bible about Noah and his people. When the heavy rain was to fall, God commanded Noah to build an Ark for all his followers so they can be saved from the rain. Well the APC under President Koroma is an Ark and we should all come onboard to be part of the development and support this President who cares so much for his people,” UBK says.

He went further to describe the SLPP as a bunch of evil planners, “You know we have a verse in the Quran, which says the enemies will plan evil against you forgetting that Allah, the master planner will plan against them as well.” And explained, “That is what happened between the SLPP and I. They thought they were doing me harm with their evil plans little did they know that Allah the Master planner was planning against them.”

Alhaji Boie Kamara assured President Koroma, his party and the people of Sierra Leone that come November 17 this year; he will work alongside his team to give President Koroma a landslide victory in the first rounds of the elections.

Alhaji Usman Boie Kamara called on all those who have trust on him, to join him in supporting President Koroma and his team to make Sierra Leone a self-reliant country which donated to others rather than receive donations.

To loud applause, he confessed that indeed he had wanted to run against President Koroma but he saw it as the work of God for him to have been denied the chance to run against President Koroma because the hand of God wanted President Koroma to enjoy a second term as President. In a thinly veiled reference to the violence-laden baggage carried by the man who beat him for the SLPP presidential candidate position, Alhaji Usman Boie Kamara said in local Creole the following words (as translated):

“I have foreseen that if I stay quiet, confusion will come back to Sierra Leone so I had to come out clearly and tell my people that I am backing Ernest Bai Koroma. Because if I had stayed silent, people might have misinterpreted my silence to mean support for what might bring back confusion to the country so I had to take a stance. My stance went beyond supporting Ernest Koroma but to also join the APC to strengthen my voice of support for Ernest Koroma against bringing back confusion to the country. I joined the SLPP which was my father's party because I thought it represented the ONE COUNTRY! ONE PEOPLE! motto of my father and his colleagues. But as we have all now seen, they are no longer practising that motto.” Boie-Kamara spoke with passion of his decision. He was saying that he could not allow the man who beat him for the SLPP flagbearer, Julius Maada Bio to become President as that would bring confusion into the country so he decided that he must make his support for the President to be as loud as possible to leave no doubt in anyone’s mind that he was totally against a Bio candidacy in Sierra Leone.

Many defected SLPP members re-echoed his words. The scale of the defection is unprecedented in Sierra Leone history.
