Health minister gets UN appointment

The United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, recently appointed Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health and Sanitation, Haja Hawa Zainab Bangura as special representative on sexual violence and conflict. Haja Bangura will replace Margot Wallstorm, a Swedish politician who has been defending the rights of women since the position was created in 2010. Haja Bangura is reported to have got wide range of experience in policy and diplomatic issues of governance, conflict resolution and reconciliation, among other issues.

 

Sierra Leonean rescues the mentally retarded

A Sierra Leonean philanthropist based in the United Kingdom (UK), Mr. Ibrahim Sultan Kamara, is currently in Sierra Leone, providing food items, used clothing and financial assistance to mentally retarded patients at the Kissy Mental Home in Freetown. Mr. Kamara has called on other Sierra Leoneans in the Diaspora to come home and contribute to national development.

 

Mamoud F.C. defeats RSLAF F.C

The female team of the Young Mamoud Football Club has defeated the female team of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces Football Club by 3 goals to 1 in the ongoing Western Area Football Association Female League, held at the National Stadium in Freetown. Young Mamoud F.C. has now taken three vital points from the RSLAF team, making them standing a great chance to qualify to the next stage of the competition.

 

Ex-combatants in protest for benefit

Ex-servicemen of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) recently protested along the main streets of Freetown, voicing out their grievances on the delay in the payment of their benefits. The ex-solders said they have been quiet for so long now and that to them, the defense ministry seemed to be doing nothing to address their concerns. The former fighters have called on President Koroma and his government to intervene and address their concerns.

 

Armed robber committed to high court

Magistrate Komba Kamanda of Court No2, in the Freetown Magistrate Court, has committed an alleged armed robber, Alhassan Kamara to the high court. The accused was charged with conspiracy to commit a felony and robbery with violence. The particulars of offence stated that, the accused intended to steal a commercial motorbike and was arrested and handed on to the Kissy Police Division for further investigations.

 

MP frustrated with NASSIT

Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Elizabeth Alpha Lavalie has expressed dismay over the way and manner in which pensioners are been treated by workers of the National Social Action and Insurance Trust (NASSIT). According to Hon. Lavalie, she has received several complaints against these workers. She said the complaints are all based on the attitude of the workers towards pensioners who go to collect their pensions. The honorable is said to have called on the senior management of the Trust to intervene and solve this ugly development.

 

Bombay Street gets facelift

Residents of the Bombay Street community in Freetown have embarked on a number of developmental projects, including the rehabilitation of deplorable roads in the community. Residents say for over twenty years now, main streets leading to the community, have been in a very deplorable state. This according to them has contributed to several accidents and injuries, especially for road users at night.

 

Sierra Leone to host Miss West Africa 2012

Sierra Leone First Face International would be hosting this year’s Miss West Africa Beauty Pageant show in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs at the Miatta Conference Hall in Freetown. The aim of hosting the contest is to sell the good image of Sierra Leone to the outside world. The show has been organized three consecutive times in London, where Sierra secured 1st and 2nd positions. It was later moved to The Gambia where Sierra Leone emerged runner-up. Audition for this show will start on 11th and ends on 22nd December this year.

 

NPPA reviews 2004 Procurement Act

The National Public Procurement Authority (NPPA) has started reviewing the 2004 Procurement Act at the Bank of Sierra Leone Complex in Freetown. The aim of the review exercise is to ensure more effectiveness and support for government programs now and in the future.

 

Man jailed 8yrs for burglary and larceny

An accused person, Michael Davies has been sentenced to a jail term of eight years by Hon. Justice Deen Tarawally of the High Court. The accused was found guilty on burglary and larceny. The particulars of offence stated that, the accused on 21st June 2010, at Ngombu Section on the outskirts of Kenema, broke and entered into a dwelling house of one Bakundu John Usman and stole properties worth Le1,275,000.
