Thinking that I was still out there on my morning walk, my nephew Kai sent me an SMS message. “Your nephew’s mother Madam Alice has passed away in Makeni.   It is said that she went home after collecting her voter card and then passed away.

I being a medical doctor and not having heard of a previous illness the only conclusion that I came to was that she had had a ‘heart attack.  I felt sad over the news because although I hadn’t seen her for many years, that is even before her son became President of Sierra Leone, I could always imagine how proud she must be to have found herself in such an enviable position  the mother of the President of Sierra Leone.

When I first knew Alice Koroma, in the mid 1960s she was the charming wife of the headmaster a Primary school in Makeni and at the same time the Chairman of Makeni Town Council, now Makeni City, where I had been transferred.  Her quiet spoken husband and I soon developed a close relationship as the medical officer in charge of the Makeni government hospital. By virtue of my official position I became an ex-officio member of the council and of its health committee.

Apart from being the ‘first lady of the town the late Mrs. Koroma was also a very regular church goer and one of the ladies who formed the backbone of the Rogbane Road Wesleyan church in Makeni where her husband was a Lay Preacher.  In those days there were a number of other women who were quite active in the church and I often stayed behind for a few minutes after Sunday service and exchanged banter with them.

I recall a particularly hilarious story of a new arrival in the township who did not understand the Temne language; the poor man had visited a house at night and in response to his knock at the door, someone inside asked “KENEH WINIE? meaning “who is it.? The poor man thinking he was being addressed by another name, replied in Krio, “ii nor be kene wini; ii be porson. (This is not Kenewini, this is somebody.) From that time to this day everyone of those friendly women and I addressed each other as Kene wini. A number of them have reportedly since passed away and now Alice has gone to join them and her husband Sylvanus.

I have referred to the late woman as a charming hostess and so it was. Every so often when I dropped by for a brief visit to late Sylvanus and his wife, even before taking a seat, Alice would ask one of the young Koroma boys to run down to mammy K’s (late Mammy Kiester) to get me a soft drink.  She was not being stingy; all I drank in those days were non-alcoholic beverages. One of those ever willing youngsters was a lad named Ernest, who is today’s President of Sierra Leone.  This must be a sad loss to him and to the entire family, a sadness shared by all who knew Alice and her late husband Sylvanus.

To Ernest, Admire and the entire Sylvanus Koroma family I offer my deep condolences and pray that God would grant her eternal rest and that “Light Perpetual would Shine on her.

May her Soul Rest in Perfect peace.

The loss of a darling mother  Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma is bereaved

The Remarkable Madam Alice Koroma

It is with shock that I received the news this morning that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, has lost his darling mother, Alice Koroma.

As I pay tribute to this wonderful lady, who was the ‘rock of the Koroma family, I want to extend my profound sympathy to the president and his entire family at the loss of this precious matriarch. Madam Alice was a distinguished citizen and a respectable member of her community.

An outstanding philanthropist who maintained her dignity and respect throughout her life, and a genuinely humbled individual despite her son ascending to the highest office of the land.

As our country mourns the loss of a great woman, we can only imagine the pain and loss the head of state must be feeling, a man whose love for his mother and family can only be matched by his passion to see his countrymen relieved of poverty and human suffering.

Madam Alice was a jewel in the crown of our country, a mother who witnessed her son took power as one of the first democratically elected President in our country’s history, at a time when the nation needed a dramatic change in the way it was governed.

The inspiration and upbringing passed on to young Ernest from his parents are indeed visible in his dynamic style of leadership; and the nurturing strength of a mother has translated into the compassionate approach that has become the trademark of the Koroma leadership.

This is a big loss to our country, as Madam Alice was an important source of inspiration for many, especially young girls, who saw her as a role model and the mother of the nation. The Head of State must take comfort in the remarkable character so reminiscent of a mother whose love for her children and family was an uncompromising part of her womanhood.

This is indeed an untimely death of a woman so viciously snatched from those who regard her as the umbrella of the family, at a time when she was just about to witness her son elected for a second term as President of our beloved country.

God’s love for her must have superseded her desire to see history in the making, as Sierra Leoneans prepare to pay tribute to the outstanding leadership of Ernest Bai Koroma, by voting in numbers in November to ensure continuity of the amazing development strides our country has taken towards the path of economic prosperity.

May the soul of Madam Alice Koroma rest in perfect peace!! God bless our Head of State and God bless our country, Sierra Leone.

Special Tribute to My Fourth Grade Teacher and Mentor : Mrs. Alice Rosaline Koroma

BY UMARU JALLOH

The sudden death of President Koroma’s mum is a significant blow not only for the Koroma family. The profound emotion and sensational pain spread through the suburbs of Wusum Hill to the surrounding villages of Makeni down to the mighty hills of Kamabai town where the great journey to earth began.,. Mammy Alice Koroma as most of us from Makeni referred to her was the Rock of Gibraltar and the corner stone for the Koroma family. I have known Mammy Alice since I was six years old. She also happened to served me as my fourth grade elementary teacher. During the late sixties Mrs. Koroma had some close friends like the wife of the late Reverend Mans, the mother of Linda Mans the current APC Women’s leader. She was also close to the late Mrs. Kamara and Mrs. Allen. They were all members of the SLC School staff.

I was no stranger to this beautiful and most respected lady. She used to call me not by my name, but said Fula man. We were about forty in her class. Throughout the time I spent with Mrs. Koroma, she never hit or beat any of us. I was the most trouble kid among my pears. She never touched me or hit me. She was the sweetest and most caring person we ever had at the school.

Though the people of Makeni and the surrounding villages like Makama, Rogbane, and Rosanda and so on and so forth are in a state of sadness and big loss, Makeni and the rest of the surrounding towns should be grateful to the Almighty god. Mammy Alice has gone, but she has paved the way for progress and prosperity, not only for Makeni but for the entire nation of Sierra Leone. Mammy Alice Koroma would have a message to deliver to Reverend Silvanus Koroma. This was what her husband and she have worked hard for to see that one day one of her sons is able to save the nation of Sierra Leone from poverty and hunger. Sierra Leoneans should not weep much for Mammy Alice ; it is a time to celebrate the great success of an icon. To the people of Makeni Mammy Alice Koroma is the hero of the hour, she has even conquered death. She had a mission to carry; now she has completed her mission successfully and now the last hour has arrived. It is her right time to go home peacefully as her very mission has been accomplished.

Mrs. Alice Rosaline Koroma, thank you for serving humanity and your country. May your soul rest in perfect Peace. Makeni and the rest of the surrounding towns will be missing you and your former student Umaru Jalloh will miss you greatly and please do me one favor , forgive me for being so nutty. The entire nation of Sierra Leone wishes to offer their prayers for for a safe transition. There is no place like home and one day we shall meet again.
