Sierra Leone Volleyball Delegation Released
The Sierra Leone Beach Volleyball delegation that was recently held in detention in Cairo, Egypt has been released following the swift intervention of senior statemen from Sierra Leone. The delegates were held in detention for close to five hours as the Egyptian Immigration Officers had doubt in the authenticity of their entry visas.
MPs Mourn President’s Mother
Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Sierra Leone House of Parliament have deferred all parliamentary sittings following the death of the mother of His Excellency President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, Mrs. Alice Rosaline Koroma. The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Justice Abel Stronge has said that the loss of the late Mrs. Koroma came as a shock to them as Members of Parliament.
SLMA Debunks Rumours of 170 Sea Disasters
The management of Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA) has debunked rumours of a sea disaster claiming the lives of 170 people recently. It has been rumoured that a local boat, “Star Nar Star” recently capsized on the high seas whilst on its way from Conakry to Freetown. The boat was said to have been overloaded with 170 people and properties worth millions of leones. However, the management has in a press release issued recently, denied the rumours, stating that there has been no such accident on the high seas of Sierra Leone.
Alleged Mad Woman Stabbed Youth to Death
An alleged mad woman has stabbed and killed a young man named Komba at Syke Street in Freetown. The woman was said to have been provoked to anger by a group of school pupils. She was then chasing her tormentors, when she came in contact with the young man and stabbed him to death. Police are investigating the matter.
Flood Affects Freetown Residents
Due to the heavy down pour in the past few days, residents along main streets of Freetown and in the slums have complained of serious flood in their houses. Residents say the flood has left properties worth millions of leones destroyed. Engineers say the flood was as a result of poor drainage systems and also residents constructing houses and structures on drainages.
Mercury Sponsors Female Journalist to Cyprus
A sport betting company in Sierra Leone, Mercury International, recently sponsored one female sport journalist, Florence Amara to cover the Beach Volleyball 13-19 World Champions in Cyprus. The game commenced on 11th July and is expected to end on 14th July 2012. The Chairman of Mercury International Mr. Samir Hassaniyeh took the decision to finance the trip of the journalist. She is expected to give compressive media coverage of the competition.
Boost for Disabled Persons
A Sierra Leonean philanthropist currently residing in the United States of America, Mr. Osman Sesay has donated used clothing and other items to persons with disability in Freetown. Mr. Sesay said the donation is part of his long term desire to improve the lives of deprived and disabled persons in his country.
Parliament Commends New Army Chief
The Parliamentary Committee on Appointments and Public Services has commended the newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), Brigadier General Samuel Omar Williams for his dedication and commitment towards the transformation of the military. The CDS was also recognised for his contributions in defending the country against the rebels during the civil war in Sierra Leone.
