Dear VP Sam Sumana
I hope this correspondence finds you and your family doing well.
Some time has certainly passed since we last spoke, but I can only assume your duties as the VP of your beloved homeland are keeping your schedule full. It was nice to read of the significant rise in economic growth projected for Sierra Leone in the recently published IMF report. That is clearly a testament to your efforts, and those of His Excellency President Koroma in getting your country positioned properly to recognize such advancements. This type of recognition will prompt further investments in your country from people like me and other investors. I commend you, His Excellency and the rest of your government for all the positive changes Sierra Leone has experienced in the short period of time since you have held office.
On a more somber note, I am writing to bring your attention to and address the recently published letter by our former partner, Mark Heiligman, regarding our prior joint venture, United Diamond Mining Company.
While we have had our own issues regarding such venture, as any business of such a nature can experience, I certainly don’t condone or concur with the contents of his letter. I additionally would like to clarify for the record that I was not privy to, or a party to, the letter in any way whatsoever. I actually haven’t spoken to Mark in at least 6 months or more.
For clarification purposes, all the funds that were directed into the company came from me and me alone. He certainly has no claim to the funds I personally contributed, and I am not aware of any funds he infused into the company himself. While I had certain expectations for the venture, I understood your conflict as expressed upon becoming Vice President. You were more than clear about that issue and I respected your decision and transparency in so doing. While it is apparent your title could have garnered many advantages for our venture, your decision in exiting the company remains one of the main reasons for the enormous respect I maintain for you because of the integrity you continue to demonstrate.
While I categorically disagree with the false accusations and allegations Mark made in the referenced letter, I see this as merely a ploy on his part, possibly instigated by the opponents of your party. It is apparent he has had his own financial struggles and seems to be grasping for straws, and in fact still owes me money. On a similar note, I respect your prompt response in regards to paying back the company the $34,000 which you had borrowed and conveyed upfront was being utilized accordingly.
In spite of all the risks involved, and the ups and downs we experienced in this venture, I was more than happy to learn from you that the machinery we brought for the purposes of our business remains intact. Whilst I acknowledge our activity in mining was a business of risks, I also want to confirm that I was quite satisfied with our results early on and only wished it could have continued further.
At this juncture I want to assure you that as long as we have our mining equipment still intact, I would simply appreciate if we could explore a way forward to bring this venture to a conclusion.
My suggestion would be to sell the equipment, though I will leave this to your judgment.
Please note that while I have tried contacting Mark by phone just recently, I have contacted him by email and conveyed my utter disapproval of his actions. To put it mildly, I do not expect him to undermine you, His Excellency or your party, any further. I sincerely hope that you will no longer be further distracted by such regretful actions and can continue on with working hard for your beloved country and deserving people.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience, and still hope to make that first trip to Sierra Leone in the near future. Until then, please know you are always welcome at any of my homes here in the United States should you happen to come my way.
Please extend my regards to His Excellency, Kadia, Sia, and the rest of your family.
I sincerely wish you and His Excellency the best in your upcoming elections.
My Regards,
Dave Kloeber
