Kroo Bay Benefits from Toilet Facility

The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) has constructed a toilet facility for residents of Kroo Bay with funds from Comic Relief/Y-CARE International in the United Kingdom (UK). The Association has also improved on the capacity of young people in that part of the country and further created a platform for their voices to be heard. The toilet facility is expected to benefit over 3,000 people in the community and its surrounding. A seven-man committee has been set up to manage the affairs of the facility.

 

UDM Unveils Running Mate

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has formally unveiled its Running Mate for the November 17 polls. The Presidential candidate for the UDM, Mr. Mohamed Bangura, has in a nomination ceremony held at the National Stadium in Freetown, named Mr. Denis Saidu as his Running Mate. He described Mr. Saidu to be a young man who loves his country and a man who is not tribalistic but has respect for all, regardless of ages, religious or political affiliations. Bangura expressed confidence that the UDM will create a memorable impact in the 2012 elections.

 

Stakeholders Hang Heads on PWD

With support from the European Union, Disabled Rights International Movement (DRIM) in collaboration with Handicap International has held a national seminar at the Bank of Sierra Leone Complex in Freetown. The seminar was aimed at discussing with stakeholder in both the private and public sectors and other line ministries on issues regarding the employability for Persons With Disability (PWD). The seminar was also used to encourage stakeholders to show concern and employ PWD.

 

Health Ministry Establishes Call Centre

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Save the Children International, UNICEF and other health agencies working in Sierra Leone, have established a call centre to help strengthening and monitoring health facilities across the country. The free toll line will help people to report challenges faced by the service across the country to relevant authorities. The call centre will also be available to capture the concerns and feedbacks of the public in relation to the free healthcare initiative.

 

UN Pays US$280,000 to Sierra Leoneans

The United Nations has compensated four families in Sierra Leone who lost their relatives who were serving the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Darfur, Sudan recently. The UN compensated the families with US$ 280,000 to be distributed equally among the four bereaved families.

 

1190 Mobile Phones for PHUs

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) has provided 1190 mobile phones for Peripheral Health Units (PHUs) across the country. The purpose of the phones is to enhance the operations of the recently launched free toll call centre initiative.

 

Police Rearrested 4 Hardcore Criminals

Personnel of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) attached at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Pademba Road in Freetown, have rearrested four hardcore criminals. The rearrested criminals were reported to have been released by the Magistrate Court of Sierra Leone after completing trials on various criminal offences recently. The Director of CID, Mr. Karrow Kamara is reported to have said that the criminals were rearrested on the grounds that they are dangerous people who according to law, must not be allowed to infiltrate the community, for fear that they might revert to their old tricks.
