The Minister of Health and Sanitation, Miatta Kargbo, on Monday 26th May 2014 confirmed the outbreak of dreaded Ebola Disease in Sierra Leone whilst also publicly blaming those who are suspected to have died from Ebola, as being the ones responsible for their deaths.According to her, some dead victims brought the deaths upon themselves by crossing the border into Guinea to attend funerals.
Minister Kargbo made these statements at an emergency press conference hosted by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in collaboration with Ministry of Information and Communication.
Government has revealed that so far, “only one” test sample has proven positive for Ebola virus. They also attacked “untrue reports” on social media. Meantime, it is very important to note that Government is also claiming that the person who proved positive had, in the words of our officials, been “feeling better” and “discharged” from Koindu Health Center. This official information is to be noted for comparisons of information in a developing story emerging out of Kissi Teng, Mandu & Jawei areas.
It is also important to note that one MCH Nurse named Messie Konneh, has been hurriedly buried in Jawei chiefdom, Bombohun village after she died at the Daru Health Center from Ebola like Organ failure in addition to Diarrhoea and Vomiting. No sample was taken off her for Ebola test to be done.
It is also important to note that one Sia Foryoh who turned up for treatment two Tuesdays ago in Koindu, with symptoms similar to Ebola, got turned away for lack of money to conduct tests on her. Sia Foryoh has died last weekend with an Ebola-type rash over face. She was niece of the Town Chief, Moses Foryoh. No sample was taken off her.
Expiry Date for the Rapid Diagnostic Test Kits sent into Kailahun district is reported as:- March 2014.
It means Kits were useless when the outbreak occured.
