As police officers last evening of July 24th 2014, battled with relatives of an escaped Ebola-positive patient in Eastern Freetown, it is confirmed that some people are dead of Ebola symptoms in Masongbo section of Makari Gbanti chiefdom in Bombali District, Northern Province. At least one of the dead had reported at a local community hospital where the blood samples sent to Kenema, tested positive for Ebola.

Sources reveal that this latter patient, whilst kept in isolation awaiting test results, escaped and went to family at Masongbo where the patient died shortly after.

Seven others known as contacts for the index case of Ebola in the district, have also perished from similar Ebola symptoms but without blood samples tested before their demise.

Health Ministry Spokesman Mr. Sidie Yahya Tunis told Awareness Times in a telephone interview last evening that the ministry was not considering the other dead patients as Ebola confirmed. He said “for now, only one patient has been recorded in Bombali District as laboratory tested positive for Ebola”.

Resident Minister North, Alie D. Kamara was reached by phone last evening but he declined to immediately comment on the unfolding scenario in Bombali district. He promised to grant us an interview later.

As of now, Kenema and Kailahun in the East; Port Loko, Kambia and Bombali in the North; Bo, Bonthe and Pujehun in the South; and the Western Area, have all recorded cases of Ebola. The first Ebola case in Sierra Leone was officially recorded in a small village in Kissi Teng chiefdom back in May 2014.  Since then, the outbreak has seen 435 laboratory confirmed cases. Scores more of suspected & probable Ebola cases have not been officially recognised nor laboratory tested.

Only Kono in East, Moyamba in the South and Koinadugu & Tonkolili in North have not recorded Ebola cases.
