The former Special Executive Assistant (SEA) to President Koroma has again strongly criticised the Government’s figures it was releasing with respect to Sierra Leone Ebola crisis. Dr. Sylvia Blyden, a trained medical doctor, has, over past five months, been consistently lambasting death numbers and infection rates as unacceptably low.
In a communication with this newspaper yesterday Sunday 9 November 2014, Dr. Sylvia Blyden has described ongoing Ebola Crisis as “the greatest public health threat ever faced by Republic of Sierra Leone”. However, she went on that the incorrect Ebola numbers being announced by health officials were, “possibly the greatest public shame a Sierra Leone government had ever been subjected to by its officials”.
“Whether it is deliberate or not, I cannot tell but those stupid statistics being released by the health officials are being done with breathtaking, barefaced cheek. The Health Ministry is insulting our intelligence as if we cannot count,” Blyden said without mincing words.
“Those government officials have turned this country to a joke in some scientific circles; I know diplomats who laugh behind our backs because of this,” Dr. Blyden lamented.
To buttress further, Dr. Blyden showed a table from Statistics released by Health Ministry for Sat. 8th & Sun 9th Nov. It shows huge discrepancy of 45 cases between figures for Port Loko, West Urban & Rural.
The Table shows that instead of 111 new cases announced by Health Ministry for Sunday 9th report; going by their totals, number of new cases, should have been 156 for the report.
