Freetown, June 16 (SLENA) - The Parliamentary oversight Committee on Local Government and Rural Development, chaired by Hon. Abubakarr Koroma has concluded ten days visit to all local councils in South and Eastern regions of the country in order to investigate finances and projects implemented for the fiscal year 2014 and 2015.
In his statement Chairman of the committee, during the oversight visit, stressed the need for proper transparency and accountability on finances and projects implemented for the development of the country, stressing on the importance of the visits and the mandate of the committee which he said is derived from the 1991 constitution of Sierra Leone and the Parliamentary Standing Orders.
During the committee’s investigations, all sector heads including: Agriculture, Education, Health, Water Resources, Youth and Sport, Social Welfare and others were in full attendance.
During the hearing, the Committee engaged, the Kenema District Council, Kenema City Council, Pujuhun District Council, Bonthe District Council, Bonthe Municipal Council, Bo District Council, Bo City Council, Moyamba District Council, Kono District Council, Kono New Senbehun Council and contractors implementing councils’ projects.
While on its site visits of projects, the committee observed that much needed to be done on feeder roads and the maintenance of existing structures.
Councils Chairmen expressed their satisfaction with the parliamentary oversight committee, but however raised concern over the frequent transfers of staff from one council to the other and problems encountered while raising revenue for the council’s development.
On the whole, the Chairman and Members of the Committee were very impressed with council’s implemented projects and funds given to them for implementation.
