Sierra Leone News : Somano Kapen mocks John Benjamin is Self Baptised "Gamechanger"

The current chairman and leader of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party has on Monday 22nd February, 2016 referred to his immediate predecessor and former boss, Mr. John Oponjo Benjamin as a self professed “Gamechanger” within the party.

Chief Somano Kapen made this statement in an exclusive telephone chat with this writer whilst he was responding to allegations made by Mr. Benjamin about breaches of clauses 4(3)(A) and 4(B)(5)(e) of the SLPP's 23rd July, 2010 Constitution by the Chief Kapen led National Executive Council (NEC) of the SLPP. The NEC had promulgated new rules and regulations.

Mr. Benjamin however rebuked Chief Kapen and others in a letter drawing the attention of the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) and his fellow SLPP members to the clauses of the current SLPP Constitution that have been breached by those purporting to attempt to amend and create rules and regulations of the party.

The clauses state that before the SLPP’s National Executive Council makes any rule or regulation, it must first, “Propose to the Annual Party Conference such amendments to the Constitution, Rules and Standing Orders” and that it must also “submit to the Party Conference such Resolution and Declaration affecting the programme, principles and policies of the Party”.

However, according to John Benjamin, who also was the signatory to the said 2010 constitution when he was the chairman and leader of SLPP, the current chair has flouted their lay down clauses. He therefore said that the recent new rules and regulations for the SLPP internal elections were void and invalid.

In a letter written to PPRC by Abu B.S. Sangarie, on behalf of his client Mr. John Oponjo Benjamin, he further accused that “the National Executive Council failed to comply with the recent Supreme Court judgment in the matter between Alie Essa Bangura and others vs Chief Somano Kapen and others to set up an Independent Electoral Board to prepare the electoral process and conduct elections”.

Whilst responding to these allegations made by his predecessor and former boss, Chief Kapen sarcastically said that Mr. John Oponjo Benjamin has baptised himself as the so called “Gamechanger” within the party so he is expecting Benjamin to behave in such a manner of trying to change a straightforward game.

Chief Kapen however promised to grant a lengthier reaction to this newspaper subsequently.

Please stay tuned right here for the subsequent views of the gentleman at the helm of the SLPP right now.
