The Ambassador of the United States of America to Sierra Leone has, in his official capacity as the representative of President Obama on Sierra Leone soil, paid his first visit to a media institution since his arrival in Sierra Leone. He chose the Africa Young Voices (AYV) Media Empire as the point of his maiden visit to a media house. As befitted such an august occasion, the AYV’s board, management and staff welcomed Ambassador John Hoover in a grand style.
He was taken on a conducted tour of the infrastructure and general facilities of the media empire and he could not resist the urge to comment that he was very much surprised over what he saw.
The Ambassador assured the AYV team that his office was open to partnership with an independent media like the AYV especially in the area of civic education.
He urged the institution’s staff to stay independent to maintain its credibility locally and internationally.
Formally welcoming the Ambassador to the media empire was the Acting General Manager of AYV, Dr. Victor Suma who said the AYV was happy to host the first gentleman of the United States Embassy in Sierra Leone.
He highlighted that from a humble beginning with just a newspaper in 2011, AYV has dramatically produced a radio station, a television station and a printing press.
“The brain behind the AYV dream is a young business entrepreneur in the person of Anthony Navo (Jnr) whose passion to promote young people and media in Sierra Leone is beyond imagination,” Dr. Suma noted.
He highlighted the successes, challenges, and future plans of the AYV, noting that the AYV is ready to partner with the U.S Embassy on several fronts.
