Whilst the findings of Sierra Leone’s post-war Truth & Reconciliation Commission (TRC) places culpability on key actors of the SLPP party for the NPRC’s needless military interruption of our multi party democracy, it is a fact that the ruling APC party has never sought power through the barrel of the gun.
The APC always takes over reigns of power through democratic means of the ballot box. The latest example of such was seen last Saturday 27th February 2016, when the APC democratically removed the SLPP from one of SLPP’s previously held Moyamba seats.
It stunned many who spoke to this Presshouse as Moyamba is known as a hotbed of support for SLPP.
The vacancy itself was reported by the Chief Administrator of the Moyamba District Council following the death of Councillor Edward T.P. Bendu, (RIP), Councillor of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) representing Ward 303, in the Moyamba District Council, which sad event took place on 28th November, 2015.
Two (2) Political parties contested the Ward Bye Election as follows: -
The All Peoples Congress (APC) and the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP).
The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) provided adequate security and the elections were generally peaceful.
Political Party agents, the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), Office of National Security (ONS), the Media including Sierra Leone Association of Journalist (SLAJ), Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), Africa Young Voices (AYV) and Star TV amongst others, observed the polls on polling day and tallying process at the NEC district office in Moyamba.
Ten (10) Polling station results were entered into the result database, representing 100% of all polling stations in the Ward.
The voter turnout was high as compared to recent Bye Elections. 1895 voted out of a voter register of 3,179; giving a percentage turnout of 60%.
The total number of valid votes cast was 1721;
There were 174 invalid votes, representing 9% of total votes cast. The results as announced by National Electoral Commissioner went thus:
“I hereby declare Koroma Zainab, of the All Peoples Congress Party (APC) who having polled the highest number of valid votes cast, duly elected Councillor for Ward 303 in the Moyamba District Council,” the NEC Chair said.
The NEC Chief then went on to say SLPP candidate Samson Caulker got only 45% of the valid votes whilst the APC’s Zainab Koroma got 55%.
This means the APC has once again demonstrated its charismatic ability to unseat the SLPP from governance - be it at local council level or from Presidency at State House.
