Motor Drivers and General Transport Workers Union has on Friday 11th March 2016 held a press conference at the National Secretariat Building in Texaco, Freetown to address the incidence of corruption within the Traffic and Road Safety Sector and in the particular the Traffic Division of the Sierra Leone Police(SLP).
The president of the Motor Divers Union Mr. Alpha Amadu Bah said, a one day ground consultative meeting of key stakeholders was held to address the persistent levying of accusations of corruption against the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) as an institution, particularly the Traffic Police Directorate and Traffic Wardens of the SLRSA, in which a communiqué was formed.
He admitted that the union recognizes the fact that there is a nationwide disregard for traffic rules and road etiquette within the sub-sector of the transportation environment, namely; commercial, private and public.
Mr. Alpha Amadu Bah said it is a common knowledge that driving as a profession has been brought into disrepute due to the reckless actions particular of some taxi and poda-poda drivers who fail to realize that paying passengers should be provided with a certain level of quality service as customers.
He said that, there is also the problem of overloading which is in conflict with the law, adding that providing the fertile ground on which collusion and other corrupt practices had thrived. He said that, the Motor Drivers Union will put in place a dedicated program to educate and influence its membership to at all times comport themselves with dignity and be law abiding.
The Vice President of the Motor Drivers Union, Mr. David Conteh said as an institution there focus is to end bribery and to educate road users. He requested that, the institution needs a law to be fining drivers and not charging drivers to court for minor offences. He admonished drivers to obey the traffic rules and regulations, not to wear slippers when driving and not to overload passengers.
