The cabinet reshuffle on Sunday 13th March, 2016 has set a new landmark for female cabinet representation in Sierra Leone. A total of eleven (11) female ministers are now poised to help achieve President Koroma’s dream for a prosperous Sierra Leone. Nine (9) reshuffled or newly named women will now join Hon. Minister Isata Kabia and Hon. Minister Marie Jalloh as government ministers.

Hon. Kabia is Minister of State 2 at Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation whilst Hon. Jalloh is Deputy Minister 2 of Ministry of Agriculture Forestry & Food Security. They are both now joined by 9 other women appointed or reshuffled to new ministerial positions.

This huge total number of eleven women is unprecedented and has since been a welcomed news for women across the country.

Starting from Mrs. Maude Peacock, Head of the Sierra Leone umbrella women’s body Women’s Forum, right down the line to ordinary women traders in the central business part of the capital city, they are all ecstatic over eleven women ministers in Sierra Leone.

The joy of female traders was manifested during the unannounced visit earlier this week of the newly named Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden to environs of PZ Roundabout, Abacha Street and Salad Ground Market.

Jubilation around female nominated minister when she strolled to PZ

Jubilant women removed their lappa clothes and spread it for Blyden to walk on whilst youths around the area, rushed to touch and hug the popular iconic female figure.

It was a reflection of the fact that for many citizens, this appointment of Blyden to head Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs at this point in time, is one of the best things that President Koroma has done.

Adoring shouts of “NA WE YONE MAMA THIS!!!!” took over the entire area as Blyden’s fans gathered in such large numbers that they blocked the traffic. Youths and women were scrambling around looking for anything coloured RED to dance around her with.

From feedback across this country, President Koroma has clearly brought joy in the minds of many youths and women across the country with appointment of eleven women to help him steer the ship of State.

Amongst them are Hon. Diana Konomanyi as Minister of Lands, Country Planning and the Environment. Ms. Elizabeth Mans is Minister of Fisheries & Marine Resource. Ms. Nanette Thomas to be Minister of Political and Public Affairs. Also, Dr. Blyden herself is to be deputised by another youthful lady, Ms. Rugiatu Neneh Turay.

Ms. Christiana Thorpe to be Deputy Minister 1 at the Ministry of Education and Technology. Mrs. Zulainatu Cooper to be Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation 11, replacing Madam Madinatu Rahman, who is elevated to Minister of Health and Sanitation 1. Ms. Kadija O. Sesay to be Deputy Minister of Works, Housing and Infrastructure.

Currently, it is an undisputed fact that the credentials of President Koroma both in gender empowerment and youth empowerment are unprecedented and unmatched by earlier Presidents seen in Sierra Leone.
