His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, Commander In-Chief of the Arm Force, President of the Republic has on Tuesday 14th February 2017, in a Nationwide broadcast announced the date for the 2018, Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections which is scheduled to take place on the 7th March,2018.
The presidential address states “Today, as envisioned by our Constitution, and in line with established practice, I have again instructed my office to put forth a public notice announcing that Parliamentary and Local Government Elections will be held a little over one year from now, on March 7th, 2018.”
The release continued that after consultation with the National Electoral Commission (NEC) will also announce that the Presidential Election shall take place on the same date.
The President said on the release that his government is in the concluding phase of a white Paperfor a new Constitution. As provided by Law, the New Constitution will be tabled Parliament in due course. If enacted by Parliament and in line with ECOWAS Protocols on democracy, a referendum will take place before the end of September this year.
President Koroma promised Sierra Leonean and the International Community to conduct a free, fair and transparent election. HE Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma called on all Sierra Leonean to continue to support in strengthening of our democracy as Sierra Leone has held four successful elections since 1996.
The President stressed that there is no better way to render this support than ensuring that we all register, we all show discipline and civility, than we all obey the rules and regulations set forth for the conduct of free and fair elections.
President Koroma strongly warned political parties actors to be law abiding.
“The place of Political Parties in our Constitution is sacrosanct; no member of a political party is above the rules and regulations of his or her political party; but no political party is above the laws of our country. As president, I am under oath to maintain Law and Order, Peace, Security and Democratic character o f the Republic of Sierra Leone. And I will use all the Powers Vested in my office to continue to ensure Peace, Security, Law and Order during the electoral circle”
President Koroma noted that elections are an expensive enterprise and the fact that we conducting a National Registration, Referendum, Local Council, Parliamentary and Presidential elections requires substantial resources. President Koroma further disclosed that his government has already committed billons of Leones to the exercise and they are committed in engaging their International Partners to support his government in filling some of the funding gaps and capacity needs they have identified in the elections process.
