The 50/50 Group of Sierra Leone has on the 25th February 2017 organized a press conference at its headquarters at Tower Hill in Freetown to brief the press about its Training of Trainers Workshop for Women’s Empowerment.
The theme for the training is ‘Breaking Barriers-Empowering Community Women in Leadership Skills for Political Participation’. The training is organized in partnership with OSIWA.
In her overview Dr. Fatou Taqi, President for the 50/50 Group said the training will last for two days, with the aim of empowering women for effective participation in politics as a means of increase women participation in politics to 40% in the 2018 elections as opposed to the 30% quota that was given to women in the last elections..
She further highlighted the successes and challenges of the organization. Some of the successes include helping victims of gender based violence to access justice, and openly speak out about abuses.
The Group has also helped women acquire political appointments, and had also provided scholarships for vulnerable girls,However, the Group is handicapped with funds to complete their building project. Dr.Taqi said the Group intend to establish a training Institute for women in Sierra Leone and the sub-region in leadership skills to prepare them to participate in politics.
She called on the public and good wishers to support the Group with funds to undertake these activities, so that more women will benefit through skill acquisitions for good leadership.
