Director General of Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO), Samuel Bangura has disclosed to this medium that his company through the National Youth Commission (NYC) is to empower a total of over ninety (90) youths on skills that are related to water supply and management.
Samuel Bangura confirmed to the Awareness Times Newspaper that his company has received a loan of USD 13.15 Million and a USD 1 Million grant to enhance the implementation of the Three Town Water Supply and Sanitation Project.
The loan is an effort to further provide improved access to adequate, safe and reliable water supply and public sanitation services in the country. The OFID loan of USD13.15 Million is an additional funding to a Three Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project in Bo, Kenema and Makeni with the African Development Bank and was co-financed by OFID in 2011.
Meanwhile, speaking on the aspect of the USD 1 Million Grant, Mr. Bangura said it is to include youths in the Three Town Project so that they can be the vehicle to drive the connection of pipe borne waters in the three towns of Makeni, Bo and Kenema. He said, SALWACO lobbied for the grant to ensure that the expansion of the Three Town Water Project is enhanced through the youths of the country.
Mr. Bangura, who himself is a youth, further said that the grant will include training youths on how they could help SALWACO in further boosting the workforce of the company. He said “it is better that we train our youths in Sierra Leone on how they could help strengthening the workforce of SALWACO and to improve their lives,” furthering that if our youths are trained, they would always be available to work for the company at the appropriate time, and at the sametime, it will be a skill that will help them individually in the future.
Meanwhile, it could be recalled that since the cooperation between Sierra Leone and OFID started in 1976, the latter has extended eighteen loans to Sierra Leone. The total value has reached USD 150 million.
The approved loans supported education, energy, transport, water supply and sanitation sectors.
With the inclusion of youths as fresh and energetic human resource, the young Director General of SALWACO, Samuel Bangura is poised to empower a critical youthful segment of the society, as completely reflected by President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma’s Agenda for Prosperity.
