Sierra Leone News : Social Welfare sends Teams to Koindu to Start Process for New Office

Two sets of teams from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender & Children's Affairs (MSWGCA) have headed in to Koindu in Kailahun's Kissi Teng Chiefdom on the orders of the Honourable Minister Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden. Both of the teams are under directives to ensure the new proposed Koindu office for the Gender Ministry kicks off as soon as possible.

Senior Officer for Advancement of Women in the Eastern Region has already travelled back into Koindu last night of March 14th 2017 whilst another Senior ICT Officer is expected to be leaving Freetown headquarters this morning to go and set up a basic desk office with computer, printer, stationary and other necessary office items needed to kickstart the process.

This building was yesterday March 14th handed over to MSWGCA by the Chiefdom authorities

Meanwhile the Chiefdom authorities have already identified the building to be allocated for the use of the MSWGCA within the huge acreages of the Koindu International Market site. In need of electrical and plumbing as well as other renovation aspects of it, the Hon. Minister has assured the people of Kissi Bendu that all of the renovation will be fast-tracked in the shortest possible time.

"The Minister and the Ministry are under supreme executive directives to speed up the process for the revitalization of Koindu as a commercial hub and many loyal staff are all geared up to make sure it happens," said Simeon Sandy one of the senior officials already assigned to the task of setting up the new office in Kissi Teng.

Meanwhile, if all goes well, the Koindu International Market itself should open officially with trading by merchants and agricultural produce dealers on this coming Sunday March 19th 2017. A lot of publicity and sensitization is currently ongoing within the triangular border area of the three countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

"It will not open and be jam packed with traders all at once but what is important is that People now know they can bring their goods to sell in the international market on every Sunday," an optimistic Chiefdom Speaker Fallah Jusu opined.

It can be recalled that the Honourable Minister of SWGCA last weekend announced that traders from the three countries could resume Sunday trading in Koindu as long as all the trading was within the confines of the Koindu international market area.

The Koindu International Market used to be very famous for decades and it was the commercial hub around which Koindu grew to be a bubbling modern town. All of that was destroyed in 1991 when civil war erupted and rebels took over the township; systematically destroying it.

In 2010, President Koroma handed over the newly built Koindu International Market but for whatever reasons, it laid abandoned by the Opposition SLPP-led Kailahun District Council and was never used despite its obvious value to the socio-economic wellbeing of women especially.

The Ebola crisis which erupted right there in Koindu environs and from there, had spread throughout the world, also further depressed Koindu's economic activities.

The President Koroma government under the social welfare ministry leadership of Hon. Minister Blyden is determined to ensure the international market is not only utilized but the Koindu Township and entire Kissi Bendu geographical expanse is eventually restored back as a bubbling and thriving border area within which women can be financially empowered in a sustainable manner.
