Sierra Leone News : Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Relay Baton Slams On Fourah Bay College Campus

A joint delegation from the Commonwealth Games and the Sierra Leone Olympic Committee on Thursday 16th March arrived on Fourah Bay College campus to showcase the Queen’s Relay Baton. The event attracted both staff and students of the University who received the delegation at the Adjai Crowther Amphitheatre.

 

The Baton was officially handed over to both the Games and Sports Supervisor of FBC and the University Registrar who welcomed the delegation on behalf of the university. Mr. Sorie Dumbuya the Registrar appreciated the team for identifying Fourah Bay College which he said is the oldest institution of higher learning south of the Sahara. He described the event as historic and went on to state that the university was proud to be part of the Queen’s Baton relay this time around.

He subsequently handed over the Baton to Professor Sahr Gbamanja, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Fourah Bay College. Professor Gbamanja in his remarks shed light on the college’s relationship with Britain pointing out that the college had been an  affiliate of the University Durham for several years adding that the college was celebrating its 190th anniversary in providing quality university education for clients in Sierra Leone and beyond. He called on all present to offer prayers for the delegation, Gods traveling mercy and a successful journey to Australia the final destination of the Baton.

 

Upon receiving the Baton from the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Fourah Bay College, Professor Ekundayo Thompson, Vice-Chancellor & Principal, University of Sierra Leone thanked the Delegation for choosing FBC among other places where the baton is scheduled to visit. He also underscored the fact that the ceremony will be considered historic in the life of FBC and the University as a whole. He said that the people of Sierra Leone belonged to the Common Wealth and shares the Common Wealth.

Whilst giving a brief history about the Queen’s Baton, Dr. Patrick Coker, president NOCSL said that the Queen’s Baton has been the traditional curtain –raiser to the Commonwealth Games since the 1958 Commonwealth Games held in Cardiff Wales. He informed all that the Queen’s Baton carries the message from Her Majesty the Queen through all nations and territories as a call to the Commonwealth to come together in friendly competitions and games.

 

He further said that the Baton which has arrived at FBC was formally launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Monday 13th March 2017 which was the International Commonwealth Day. The president of the National Olympic Committee in Sierra Leone pointed out that Sierra Leone is the first country were the Baton has arrived in the run up to the games noting that Fourah Bay College shared the joy of hosting the Baton. He said that the photographs taken would provide memories of the visit. Dr. Coker informed staff and students that the Queen’s Baton would travel for three hundred and eighty-eight days throughout all nations and territories in the commonwealth games history. Historic photographs at strategic locations on campus with the baton by staff and students climaxed the occasion.
