Bundu recently declares as a presidential hopeful for the March 07th 2018 election. Following this announcement by the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Leonard Fofanah of Constituency 015 in Kenema District, Eastern Sierra Leone, is now the new Majority Leader of the House of Parliament and the Leader of Government Business, and Hon. In addition, the Hon. Speaker also asked the Clerk of Parliament to put on hold the re-arrangement of seats, pending further instructions.

Honourable Leonard Fofanah, Newly Appointed Majority Leader of Sierra Leone House of Parliament

On a telephone interview with Awareness Times Newspapers, the Secretary General of the All Peoples Congress (APC), Ambassador Osman Foday Yansaneh dismissed rumours that the decision to remove Hon. Ibrahim Bundu as Majority Leader of Parliament was taken by the National Advisory Committee (NAC) of the APC. Amb. Yansaneh said, such decision was taken by Parliament. “The decision was taken by Parliament and we don’t question Parliament. Parliament is the supreme representative of the people, in their wisdom if they take any decision, I believe it will be in accordance with the constitution and also in accordance with Parliament Standing Orders,” Amb. Yansaneh stated.

Responding to his removal as Majority Leader of Parliament, the Member of Parliament of Constituency 052 in Port Loko District, Hon. Ibrahim Bundu confirmed to Awareness Times Newspaper that indeed he has been removed from his position. He however, declined to comment any further with regards to his reaction about his removal. He said, “I am still putting my thoughts together so that I could come out with a succinct reply later.”

In addition, the Presidential Spokesman, Abdulai Bayraytay, whilst defending the Presidency in the removal of the Majority of the House of Parliament said, “the decision is a party decision taken by APC Members of Parliament.” He said, being a Leader of Government Business in Parliament means that one need to supervise Members of the Houses that are from the ruling APC, the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples party (SLPP) and Paramount Chief Members of Parliament. He said the appointment of Hon. Leonard Fofanah, who is only now completing his first term in Parliament, shows that the APC believes in empowering people from different regions of the country despite his experience in Parliament.

Meanwhile, it should be recalled that the appointment of Hon. Leonard Fofanah of Constituency 015 as Majority Leader of the House of Parliament, has now seen him join his sister, the SLPP Minority Leader Hon. Dr. Bernadette Lahai of Constituency 013 as the two leaders of the House of Parliament who hail from the same eastern district of Kenema.
