Through the instrumentality of the lobbying of the Office of First Lady, Madam Sia Nyama Koroma, who pleaded with the Israeli State to establish a functional dialysis machine in Sierra Leone, Connaught Hospital, Sierra Leone’s main referral medical center , is now fully equipped with a Dialysis Unit. This Dialysis Unit ensures that kidney patients in the country are to survive without traveling abroad for further treatments.
Speaking to the Awareness Times Newspaper on Sunday 2nd April 2017, during an interview, Honourable Minister of Health and Sanitation Dr. Abubakarr Fofanah said that the five (5) machines which comprise the Dialysis Unit, are significant towards ensuring that the Government of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma delivers on his health care programmes. The Minister further praised the First Lady for her relentless efforts in ensuring that provisions are made towards catering for the healthy needs of people suffering with kidney diseases in the country.
Meanwhile, it could be recalled that during President Koroma’s visit to Israel last year, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu stated “I have to say that we, like the rest of the world, watched with great concern the great battle that you fought against Ebola. We thought that it was important, I thought it was important that Israel send assistance. We did - a field hospital. We have other assistance that we’re offering in the field of health, like the dialysis center in Freetown Hospital.” Israeli Prime Minister cites the dialysis assistance which was initiated as a direct appeal from First Lady.
Reacting to this recent improvement in the health sector, this reporter visited the Connaught Hospital in Freetown, where he spoke to a patient who expressed delight over the Dialysis Unit. Yeabu Turay said “the First Lady is a woman with kind heart,” and that there is no way President Koroma would have been a successful President as he is now without the support of such a woman.
