The Principal of the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (MMCET) polytechnic, Dr. Saidu Kanu on Saturday 8th April 2017 disclosedthat the matriculation of over 1,000 students marked another milestonein the history of the college to host the first matriculation ceremony at the Congo Cross Campus of the polytechnic reiterating that after over 50 years of dedicated service to the country and beyond, the institution is evermore determined to provide quality education to the people for their effective contributions towards the national development aspirations of Sierra Leone.

He enlightened that providing quality education for the country’s future leaders cannot be achieved with bare set of objectives reiterating that set of objectives can only be achieved when the conducive learning environment exists and highlighted some of the development strides MMCET has undertakennecessary for the effective running of the polytechnic.

Dr. Saidu Kanu cataloged the comprehensive curriculum review of the college’s academic programs to ensure that it is at par with international standards, address the country’s national development challenges, introduced new academic programs in line with the country’s national development agenda such as the Agenda for Prosperity as well as measure the quality of the graduates as the ultimate learning outcome.

He went on to mention the introduction of the semester system in the 2017/18 academic year that would provide more contact hours between students and lecturers, replace the several examinations time with practical lessons as well as realistically reduce the amount of funds spent on stationery for setting examinations adding that the semester system would also enable the polytechnic to synchronize its operations with other institutions.

According to the Principal, several years have lapsed without graduates of the institution receiving their diplomas and certificates that has disadvantaged them in seeking job opportunities and pursuing advanced studies for which the Ministry of Education has mandated MMCE&T to produce certificates for its graduates that would be ready at the end of this academic year. Other developments he highlighted are the internet connectivity provided by the World Bank through the Ministry of Information and Communications at the Goderich campus but clarified that the college is only enjoying the facility for two years after which they must take full responsibility to sustain it. He further disclosed, “I am grateful to the Arab Republic of Egypt for donating quality equipment to the college that includes automobile, electronics and carpentry equipment for the Faculty of Engineering at Congo Cross Campus to provide hands-on practical for our students. The college’s administration has also provided a Computerized Examination Office and staff and students database, a Resource Centerfor the production of academic materials, rehabilitation of the library and hospital, donation of books by the Brook Trust Foundation, the $317,000.00 International Atomic Energy Agency project for the installation of three medical science laboratories to be used to train students in Medical Laboratory Diagnostics, Veterinary Diagnostic skills, Public Health skills, Basic Sciences Laboratory skills in Chemistry, Biology and Physics.”

Dr. Saidu Kanu continued that the Congo Cross and Brookfields campuses of the polytechnic have undergone general facelifts and mentioned some of the challenges facing the polytechnic like accommodation, classroom space and sitting due to the increasing student population, transportation and hotels.

The Dean of the Congo Cross Campus, Dr. Desmond A.K. Conteh congratulated the 2017 matriculants for working assiduously to become members of the revered institution pointing out that the country is in dire need of the middle-level power and therefore the theme for this year’s matriculation“Sustainable Employability” need not be reiterated. He also reminded the students to work hard and stay focused and warned against cultism and indiscipline underlining that success does not come by cheaply and that hard work leads to success and achievement in life. Dr. Sahr Fillie, Principal of the Freetown Teachers College, who delivered the keynote address, admonished the students to abhor violence, stealing, cultism, cheating in examinations and other vices as well as uphold the dignity of the institution.

He also articulated that tertiary education would enable them to identify problems, analyze situations and solve problems in the world of work adding that their planning, organization and time management skills increases as they study longer and intensively concluding that the importance of tertiary education cannot be overemphasized.
