The Leader and Chairman of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) Chief Bai Sheborah Somano Kapen III has on a telephone interview with Awareness Times Newspaper on Wednesday 12th April 2017 ignored claims made against him being illegitimate Leader Chairman of the SLPP. The claims was made by John Oponjo Benjamin, Former Chairman and Leader of SLPP who is also now one of the leading contenders for the party 2018 standard bearer for the party.
“I refuse to respond to Mr. Benjamin because he is running for the flagbearership of our party and I don’t want anything to happen tomorrow and I get to be blamed. Referring to me as illegitimate chairman, that is his opinion and I have nothing to say and I don’t think it’s fair on my own side to comment” Chief Kapen said.

It could be recalled that whilst talking to Awareness Times Newspaper on Monday 10th April 2017, the former Chairman and Leader, Mr. John Oponjo Benjamin referred to the entire national led executive of Chief Somano Kapen “Illegitimate persons”
Mr. Benjamin said the decision of the Appeals Court of Sierra Leone to slam an injunction on the planned convention of the SLPP is a clear indication that the national executives of Chief Somano Kapen have indeed outlived their tenure in office.

He further cited that as per the SLPP’s 1995 constitution, Chief Kapen’s term as chairman and leader should have ended since late 2015. He added that as things stand, Chief Kapen hasn’t the legitimacy to take the SLPP into any convention for their 2018 flagbearer candidate.
Mr. JOB advised that, Chief Kapen should focus on organizing a national delegate conference for the election of national executives of the Party. Hence, Mr. Benjamin said “The SLPP must not have a flagbearer candidate without screening its national officers.”
