Sierra Leone News : Government Puts Swift Response to Mile-91 Storm Disaster

The APC led government of President Ernest Bai Koroma has responded swiftly to a storm disaster at Mile-91 township which left over 100 buildings damaged. 


In a social media statement by Alhaji Sheriff, the Head of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender & Children’s Affairs in Tonkolili, “at around the hours of 6pm of 18th April 2017, disaster in the form of a heavy storm with a high velocity magnitude befell Mile 91 in the Yoni Chiefdom of Tonkolili district. Heavy down pour of rain destroyed more than 100 buildings and structures ranging from dwelling houses to educational structures. For example, the two Ahmadiyya Muslim schools and the SLMB primary school got totally unroofed. Women, Children and many vulnerable citizens are all affected.”

The statement from the MSWGCA Head in Tonkolili District added “impact assessment team comprising the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs in Tonkolili, Office of National Security (ONS) and the UN WFP are now on the ground collecting data on this disastrous disaster and providing initial relief.”

 

Alhaji Sheriff further expressed abundant thanks “to our mentor and Honourable Minister, Dr. Sylvia Blyden for providing the MSWGCA team here in Tonkolili District with the inspiration to always know that we must be first responders. This has now laid a solid foundation for us to be amongst the first responders to now zoom in when disaster strikes and work as a team with other agencies like the Police and ONS in achieving His Excellency the President’s Agenda in the Social Welfare and service delivery sector.”

Meanwhile, reacting to the swift actions of the Government and other development partners, Honourable Aaron Aruna Koroma representing Constituency 062 within which is Mile 91 but who is currently in America on official trip, told Awareness Times that he has been constantly in touch with the indigenes of Mile 91 since the disaster. On behalf of the people affected, the MP expressed his profound thanks to the Government of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma for the setting up of swift modalities to help the affected people of his constituency.

 

Meanwhile, the Ministry launched phone contacts for those who would want to provide support or assistance to victims. Contact is the MSWGCA Office in Tonkolili on phone number +232-79-633343 for onward transmission to the Mile-91 Disaster Relief Coordination Team set up by JOINT agencies of Central Government and the local authorities.
