Newly appointed Ombudsman for the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Chief Citizens’ Legal advocate, Lawyer Melron Nicol-Wilson has declared that his main focus is to excise his duties with the highest level of professionalism and integrity, so that he could advance President Koroma’s Agenda for Prosperity in his new office.

Speaking to the Editor of this newspaper during a telephone call interview on Saturday 6th May 2017, in a very relaxed tone of voice, the young charismatic and determined Ombudsman said: “I am focused on dealing with all backlog cases and create a more effective Office of the Ombudsman, as instructed by His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.”

In addition, Mr Nicol-Wilson gave a clear insight into the way his office will be approaching the President’s Agenda. He stressed that amongst the many things he would do is to firstly set out three programmes of action. He mentioned these programmes of action as follows: Power to the people and the Ombudsman to be able to demand justice; Empower the Office of Ombudsman to be able to deliver its mandate;  and lastly, deliver a strategic plan of action to be able to deal with all backlog cases and address emerging complaints against the government.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nicol-Wilson added: “One of the most pivotal programme in the Office of the Ombudsman is my immediate 100 Days Plan of Action.” According to Mr Nicol-Wilson, the 100 Days Plan will be launched in this month of May. He explained that he intends to travel to the Ombudsman regional offices in Makeni City, Northern Region; Bo City, Southern Region and Kenema City, Eastern Region, to consult and consolidate inputs to be included in his 100 Days Plan.

Meanwhile, it could be recalled that the appointment of Mr Nicol-Wilson as Sierra Leone Ombudsman was greeted by great admiration in choice of President Koroma. Many who reacted to his appointment both on social media and traditional media say that the decision of President Koroma to appoint the youngest Ombudsman in the country’s history is timely and would be a big boost in the fights to protect human rights in Sierra Leone.

Due to his wealth of legal experience, many say, Mr. Nicol-Wilson is a symbol of justice and human rights in Sierra Leone, because he is seen as been greatly involved in promoting and protecting the rights of people from all walks of life.

A human rights activist opined that Mr. Nicol Wilson has gained a place on the “President Most Trusted allies”, making him the champion of justice and human rights in Sierra Leone.
