Sierra Leone News : African ANSP Ends Three-Day Peer Review Meeting in Freetown

The African Air Navigation Services Providers (ANSP) has on Friday 5th May 2017 ended a three-day peer review meeting that started on Wednesday 3rd May 2017 at the Bintumani Conference Hall, Aberdeen, Western Freetown.

The meeting hosted by the Roberts Flight Information Region (RFI) aim at bringing member states to discuss issues of Air Navigation Services in the region and Africa at large. The Roberts FIR was established by three Mano River Union head of states, President Siaka P. Stevens of Sierra Leone, President William Tolbert of Liberia and President Sheku Toure of Guinea in the seventies to address issues of air transportation.


In his opening remarks, at the meeting on Thursday 4th May 2017, the Minister of Transport and Aviation, Honourable Leonard Balogun Koroma said he stand in representation of his boss, President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma to make a statement to members of the continents Aviation Community and Related Agencies and Organizations.


Minister Koroma disclosed that President Koroma is fully abreast with the preparations for the meeting and will be interested in its proceedings as well as the final report. He continued that as the Minister in charge of Aviation and member of the Ministerial Council of the Roberts Flight Information Region, he has been following with keen interest information relating to the Air Navigation Services Providers Peer Review initiative which was launched by the President of the Council, Dr. Bernard Alieu Olumuyiwa.


“Today’s gathering of Air Navigation Services Providers from the four cardinal corners of Africa in Freetown is a testimony to the preparedness of the Roberts Flight Information Region to move from the doldrums and join the family of Air Navigation Services Providers” Said Hon. Leonard Koroma.


The chairman of the occasion who is also the Director General of the Civil Aviation, Abu Bakarr Kamara on behalf of the Government and Peoples with reference to the Aviation Community of the Republics of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone said “It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this land we love, our Sierra Leone’s Capital of Freetown on the occasion of the first Air Navigation Services Providers (ANSP) Peer Review Meeting”


A. B. Kamara added that the essence of the meeting as one of the key critical areas for the implementation of ICAO SARPs on Aviation Safety, ensuring the maintenance of an effective, efficient and integrated ANS system that is properly coordinated among all stakeholders cannot be over emphasized. He went on that it is an integral component of the effort, desire and all other factors that are considered by members of the Aviation World to ensure safe skies for the safety of flights.


ICAO’s Regional Director, Western and Central Africa, Mam Sait Jallow on behalf of the President of ICAO Council, the Secretary General, he congratulated and expressed his profound gratitude to the Secretary General and Director Generals of Member States of the Roberts Flights Information Region for accepting to host the meeting, thus demanding clearly their commitment to and solidarity with the international civil aviation community to which they belong fully.


Among countries that were represented include, Guinea, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Senegal, Ivory Coast, host, Sierra Leone to name but few.


At the climax of the meeting, it was agreed that similar meetings should continue and all member states should work in close collaboration for safe skies in Africa.
