Sierra Leone News : Vimetco Bauxite Mining Company 1st Launches Community Development Committee in their Mining Areas

The Vimetco Bauxite Mining Company has on Friday 12th May 2017 at a well-attended ceremony at the ICS Primary School Hall; Lower Banta Chiefdom, Moyamba District launched the Community Development Committee for five Chiefdoms to help bring more development to the indigenes of Rutile and its environs.

According to the Human Resources and Corporate Affairs Director, Vimetco Company, Alusine Conteh the newly established community development committee will be responsible to implement sustainable community development projects in the five Mining Chiefdoms.

Alusine Conteh urged committee members to be transparent and judiciously utilize these funds for the development of their chiefdoms. Mr Alusine added that Vimetco will continue to deliver on its cooperate social responsibility. He thanked the Paramount Chiefs for their supports and confidence they have for the management of Vimetco.



In his statement,  chairman for the occasion, who doubles as the Moyamba District Council Chairman, Professor Bob Kandeh in said that the Vimetco Bauxite Foundation then has implemented series of community development projects worth about 1.7 billion Leones in the five Bauxite Mining Chiefdoms. Professor Bob Kandeh added that the Vimetco Bauxite Mining Company is the first mining company to sign the community development agreement. Professor Bob Kandeh thanked the Vimetco Company for paying 1% of their gross revenue to Community Development activities fund which he said that has led to the construction of schools, roads, health centers, hand pump wells and Court Barrays at different locations in the five Mining Chiefdoms. Professor Bob Kandeh called on the Community Development Committee members to work diligently with the community stakeholders and together with the Management of Vimetco to enhance development.


The Paramount Chief of Lower Banta Chiefdom John Jibao Russell-Nyaama in his statement described the launching ceremony as historic adding that Vimetco is the first mining company to launch the Community Development Committee in the country. He refers to Vimetco as the best mining company in terms of service delivery and he added that Vimetco has a very good relationship with stakeholders in the five mining chiefdoms. He pledged the support of Paramount Chiefs towards the operations of the Vimetco Company and therefore encouraged the newly formed Community Development Committee members to work concertedly with the Vimetco management for peace and development.


The Human Resource and Corporate Affairs Director for Vimetco Company, Alusine Conteh said that despite their operational constrains, the Vimetco Bauxite Mining Company still remains committed to its Corporate Social Responsibilities in complying with government policy in the establishment of a Community Development Committee to assist in the developmental activities in the various mining sites in the country. “We are the First Mining Company to comply with government policy in the establishment of the Community Development Committee in the country,” said the Human Resource and Corporate Affairs Director Mr. Alusine Conteh.  He guaranteed that the management of Vimetco Company will continue to provide the conducive atmosphere to the day to day operations of the Community Development Committee. He vouched that their management will ensure an adequate and timely allocation of funds to the newly established Community Development Committee.


Other important personalities present at the occasion include the CDC Chairman James Miller, the community affairs manager Joseph Amadu, the government representative, Emmanuel Jusu, the Bo District Council Chairman Joseph Munda Bindi and a Civil Society representative Sylvester Bob Katta have also made meaningful contributions.
