The Head of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Mohamed Bendu Kamara has told news men on Thursday 18th May 2017 that the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) is on top of situation in addressing security issues of armed robbery and other related matters of interest. He assured the press and the public in general at the weekly government press briefing, in the Ministry of Information and Communications’ Conference Room #8 Youyi Building, Freetown.

While updating the press on the of the country, CSP MB Kamara disclosed that the country is relatively peaceful “We wish to inform members of the forth-estate for the attention of  the general public that the general security situation  country-wide is relatively  peaceful;  except that of late  through complainants  we have  been receiving  suspected trend of armed robbery incidents involving the attack on filling stations at Lunsar, Port Loko, Mamammah and most recently, the attack  on Mercury outlet and  agents at wellington industrial estate, were observed and necessary strategies have been put in place to reverse the situation”

He added that the most recent incident so far observed is the attack on Mercury outlet and agents at Wellington, East of Freetown by a group of nine armed men with guns, cutlasses and other offensive implements at about 2:30pm on Wednesday, 10th May, 2017; and the subsequent pursuit of the said armed men by youth, community members and Police Officers.

The CID boss went on to say that the said incident resulted to the death of five of the alleged armed robbers; two sustaining serious injuries were arrested and handed over to the police; two others, alias Virgin boy and the driver of one red and white Mitsubishi-L 400 van with no registration number called Shakor escaped.

Mr. Kamara continued that, several individuals have been arrested and are currently helping the police with the investigation. “So far, prima facie’ evidence revealed that all of the above incidents are unconnected with the same perpetrators” he said.

He however maintained that the SLP leadership has therefore decided to centralize the investigation of all armed robbery incidents at the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters under the supervision of AIG MORIE LENGOR, Director of Crime Services.

CSP Kamara noted that the Criminal Investigations Department has successfully carried out high profiled investigations, such as; the murder of Sydney Buckle Alias D.
