Sierra Lone New : Dr. Smith Updates the Press on the MCH/Mass LLINs Distribution

The Malaria Control Programmes Manager in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS), Dr. Samuel J. Smith has on Thursday 8th June 2017, updated news men at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation Conference room 4th Floor Youyi Building in Freetown on the Maternal Child Health Week and Mass distribution of the Long-Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLINs) campaign across the country that has started since June 1st and is expected to end 10th June 2017.

 

Dr. Smith explained that the campaign has started and itís ongoing in all the 14 electoral districts in the country. He added that they are expecting that an integrated maternal and child health campaign of high quality conducted nationwide will achieve; 95% coverage of children between (6-59) months with Vitamin A; 95% coverage of children (12-59) months with Albendazole; 95% of all households during registration and distribution of vouchers for LLINs; 80% of the total population of the country will be sleeping under LLINS; 95% of households reached with IEC and BCC messages for improved health seeking behaviour.

According to Dr. Smith the campaign so far is making a huge progress as they are receiving data daily from the field officer in the various districts across the country. He revealed that some   districts like Koinadugu and Bonthe have recorded some challenges especially in accessing people. He added that someof the reasons are because of the topography of  the areas and they are working assiduously to meet their target at the end of the campaign. He went on to say that even after the campaign period, they will do a follow up to reach to those who were not fortunate to get the supply.

 

The Malaria Control Manager disclosed that they will also distribute the LLINs to the aged, physically challenged and other vulnerable in the country. Dr. Samuel Smith emphasized that the key issued they have identified in the campaign have revealed that some areas are not covered by the house hold teams, population variances, splitting of households by community members, children sent with vouchers to collect LLINs.
