Former Chairman and Leader of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) has disclosed that his party has ordered for an urgent meeting to “discipline reckless supporters.”
Mr. John Oponjo Benjamin made this statement yesterday Sunday 11th June, 2017, during a telephone call interview with Awareness Times Newspaper, whilst discussing on the recent unfolding in the SLPP for which the National Secretary General allegedly expelled three (3) party members without the knowledge of the current Chairman and Leader.
Further explaining, Mr. Benjamin said the expulsion of Alusine Bangura, Alex Kargbo and Victor Sheriff from the SLPP was very unconstitutional and that the action of the National Secretary General of the SLPP, Ambassador Alie Badara Kamara was geared towards fueling more conflict in the party.

Against this backdrop, Mr. Benjamin said that the party has called for an immediate stakeholder meeting, scheduled for Thursday 15th June, 2017, to discuss on many relevant issues, amongst which to discipline all reckless supporters of the SLPP.
Meanwhile, it could be recalled that Ambassador Alie Badara Kamara in letters dated 2nd June, 2017, wrote that the SLPP National Executive Council (NEC) Resolution of 25th March, 2017, in section seven (7) specifically requested the three plaintiffs to withdraw the matter from Court of Appeal by March 29th, 2017.
Therefore, he annulled the membership and expelled Alusine Bangura, Victor Rogers and Alex Kargbo from the party for what Amb. Badara refers to as “another violation of Clause 2(5) of the SLPP Constitution, 1995(as amended).
Chief Somano Kapen, who is also current Chairman and Leader of the SLPP had also in an earlier interview said that he was not aware of the actions of the party’s National Secretary General.
Against this backdrop, Mr. Benjamin, who is the predecessor of Chief Kapen said that “no National Secretary General of the SLPP has right to expel a member without the knowledge of the Chairman and Leader.” Therefore he said: “Reckless supporters of the party must be disciplined.”
Meanwhile, for balance of story, Awareness Times Newspaper tried to get on to Ambassador Kamara for his side, but we were unable to get on to him as of the time we were coming to press. However, we would certainly publish his side when we were able to get on to him.
