Sierra Leone News : SLRA Holds Public Consultation and Discussion on the Wellington – Masiaka Toll Road Construction

The Sierra Leone Roads Authority together with the consultants of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment yesterday Tuesday June 13th at the Waterloo District Council Hall has concluded two days Public Consultation and discussion with stakeholders and residents within the Toll Roads axes.

 

According to the Director General of the Sierra Leone Roads Authority Ing. Mrs Memuna Kumba Jalloh in welcoming participants to the ceremony she urged them to bring out important ideas that they think the consultants on the Environment Impact Assessment on the Toll Roads left out in their reports so that it can be addressed in the final reports that would be used in the construction of the road.  She added that the Wellington –Masiaka Toll Road project is highly important to the country as a whole and it will help in the reduction of road accidents and reduce the rates of wear and tear of drivers’ vehicle. She went on to say that the roads project is part of His Ernest Bai Koroma infrastructural policy in enhancing good and comfortable roads for the people of the country. Ing. Mrs Memuna Kumba Jalloh encouraged all participants to make their input into the presentations of the Consultants reports because the Sierra Leone Roads Authority considers their contributions key to the successes of the road project and she encouraged  all present to say their minds.

The Chairman of the Western Area Rural District Council, Alhassan Cole addressing participants in the Public Consultation and Discussion ceremony said it is important for government to implement stringent measures for the four (4) lane road construction to curb lawlessness and indiscipline on road users in the country. He added that drivers especially commercial drivers should conform themselves to meet best practice in the road so that they would not caused any havoc or portray attitude that would be detrimental to road users in the country.

 

The Honorable Member of Parliament for constituency 94 Mr. Kemokoh Conteh in the deliberation said that the road construction has several impacts on the Socio-economic existence of the people. He went on to say that His Excellency Ernest Bai Koroma made no mistakes in imploring the services of the China Railway International Group (CRIG) to construct the Toll road in the country and he therefore thanked His Excellency Ernest Bai Koroma for such a laudable venture in improving the infrastructure of the country.

 

The representative from the Motor Drivers’ Union Mr. Edward Bangura thanked President Ernest Bai Koroma, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority and the China Railway International Group (CRIG) for making the Toll Road a reality. He added that they are the major users of the road and in the inception of the four lane road construction they now came to realize hugely the importance of the Rights of way. He went on to say that they are now proud that since the commencement of the road they have fewer problems with the wear and tear of their vehicle’s tires. He urged that government and development partners should ensure that the four lane road should be free from market and park so that it would enhance safety in the road.

 

The representative of the Sierra Leone Police Inspector Kebbie Koroma said that the four lane road construction has helped their operations within the Wellington –Masiaka axes especially in the reduction of the rates of accidents. He thanked the Sierra Leone Roads Authority for the good work.

 

The Resident Engineer of the China Railway International Group (CRIG) Mr. Frank Zhao called on all Sierra Leonean to assist so that they would be able to construct the road. He vouched that they would protect the environment and ensures that they construct good roads for the people of the country.

 

After the consultants presented their reports to the public some recommendations were made and at the end the consultants guaranteed that the recommendations of the people would be factored in the final report before it would be submitted to the Sierra Leone Roads Authority so that the China Railway International Group (CRIG) would take it seriously during the construction exercise on the road.
