Sierra Leone’s current Statistician General, Mohamed King Koroma, is indeed a personality to reckon with when it comes to statistical issues. Some have tagged him as a genius in his own right simply because he has mastered the science of accurately playing with figures to the admiration of many near and far. Very unassuming, he is a man that talks less but when it comes to the performance of assigned tasks he does so perfectly to the best of his ability.

King Koroma, as he is popularly known, is a man who apparently has no adversary, very warm and friendly always extolls officials that add value to the work of the Statistics Sierra Leone. “He believes that when officials work as a team the mandate of the institution could be efficiently executed,” a United Nations diplomat who worked closely with the Central Statistics Office on statistical issues intimated media practitioners during a Press Conference prior to the last census that was conducted.

Mohamed King Koroma is a highly educated man with a vast wealth of experience. He has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, Master of Engineering in Computer Software from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, Certificate in Applied Statistics and Computing from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, Certificate in Applied Basic Programming from the Institute of Public Administration and Management(IPAM), Application of Microcomputers and Use of Standard Software in a Statistical Office from IPAM, Certificate in United Nations Inter-Regional Workshop on External Trade Statistics , Construction of Indices and ASYCUDA Application for Custom Data from the Region Institute of Population Studies,Legon, University of Ghana, Certificate amidst a host of others. He worked as a teacher in Mathematics and Physics at the Bo Secondary School, Statistician Central Statistics Office (CSO),Statistician Programmer,CSO,Statistician Senior Programmer ,CSO,Senior Statistician Chief Programmer, Director Data Processing Statistics, Deputy Statistician General, Statistics Sierra Leone, Acting Statistician General, Statistics Sierra Leone.

His contributions have positively impacted immensely towards the country having credible Housing and Population Censuses not to talk of other surveys. We cannot underestimate the importance of a country having credible census figures as they are very significant for the Government and other stakeholders to plan properly for development interventions.

However, without getting the qualified and trained personnel at the helm of affairs getting accurate statistical figures could not be easily achieved. This is exactly where Mohamed King Koroma fits in as he has successfully raised the profile of Statistics Sierra Leone to an enviable peak.

“He is a gentleman whom you can always feel comfortable to work with,” a Senior Statistician informed this medium adding how he is good at generating discussions on statistical issues until a consensus is reached instead of imposing his ideas on others as it obtains in certain institutions.
