The Minister of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS), Professor Monty Jones, has called on farmers in the country to increase production and productivity. He made this statement on Monday 3rd July 2017 while addressing hundreds of women farmers from Kailahun and Kenema during a cash transfer program held at Chinese farm along Wahman Abu Road in Kenema.

He said a true farmer is a person who produces not only  food feed his or her family but a person who produces food to sell to his friends and family that would improve the economy of the country.

He said farmers should think not only for domestic markets but for foreign markets too.

He disclosed that the Ministry has brought in 250,000 bags of 50 kg of fertilizer of various varieties to increase production and productivity and encouraged farmers to do three applications of the fertilizer during production.

He said out of 7.1 million Sierra Leoneans, 60% of the working force of the nation are farmers.  He continued that agriculture is the key for development in any developing country.

Various farming groups from Kailahun and Kenema districts graced the ceremony.

Four of such farming groups namely BII-KPAN farmers’ Association, Eastern farmers Kailahun, Niawama Vegetable Farmers Association (NVFA) and Food and Nutrition, will each be given the sum of  Le20,000,000 (twenty million Leones) as support to continue increasing production and productivity.

He commended the Kailahun district for their speed in increasing production and thanked the Blama youth sisters for working side-by-side with their male counterparts in their agricultural venture.

He commended all for moving in the right direction in achieving food self-sufficiency for the country.

He advised all to be focused and moderate in the under-takings,and expressed hope to see multiplication of determined sisters across the nation.
